When studio Madhouse released the anime adaptation ten years later, they did an outstanding job at capturing these qualities. Whereas his other iconic work 20th Century Boys is more on the weird and kooky side of this sensibility, his acclaimed 1994 title Monster is the epitome of esoteric mystery.
The works of mangaka Naoki Urasawa are a very good entry point for the anime and manga newcomer, in that they combine the familiar writing of your typical Western thriller series with the sensibility for unique narrative concepts that so often characterizes its Japanese counterparts.
